TWO-STORY TOURIST APARTMENT BUILDING IN MOLYVOS

TWO-STORY TOURIST APARTMENT BUILDING IN MOLYVOS

This architectural study concerns a two-story complex of tourist apartments in the historic settlement of Molyvos, Lesvos. Its main goal is the harmonious integration of the new building into the traditional urban fabric and the preservation of the distinctive architectural character of the place.

The study was a complex design challenge: the plot was subject to significant planning and morphological restrictions, and the proposal required the approval of the competent Archaeological Service. These requirements shaped the design framework from the very beginning, making it a priority to adapt the architectural composition to the particular characteristics of the plot and to the strict standards for the protection of the historic environment.

The design approach was based on a study of the local architectural tradition, with emphasis on the use of natural stone, the proportions of the volumes, the size and arrangement of the openings, and the overall scale of the building. The choice of materials and the treatment of the façades seek continuity with the existing built environment, without uncritically reproducing traditional models.

At the same time, the functional layout of the tourist apartments was designed with comfort, privacy and quality of stay in mind, meeting the demands of contemporary hospitality.

The success of the study lies in treating every individual constraint as an integral part of the architectural process. Through successive design adjustments and well-founded choices, the proposal met the requirements of the project and secured the necessary archaeological approval, demonstrating that even a particularly demanding plot can become the starting point for a complete architectural composition, deeply connected to its place and its history.
